Access Services Committee Committee Meeting February 19, 2008 10:30 AM 702 Olin Agenda: Borrow Direct Block Voyager ARES Review of Borrowing Program
Minutes: In attendance: Carmen Blankinship, Barbara Berger Eden, Caitlin Finlay, Joanne Leary, Nancy Moore, Staci Rogers, Pat Schafer, Lenora Schneller, Zoe Stewart-Marshall, and Cammie Wyckoff
Borrow Direct Block
Currently, there is no recourse for blocking patrons that are not in good standing with BD.
- We believe the only way to manually block a patron is to set the counter to trigger a block.
- When we are billed from another BD institution for an item, we manually create a bill and send it to the patron.
- Manual bills could be created in Voyager, but they do not transfer to the Bursar through the same channels as circulation generated fines.
- According to Caitlin, there are approximately 100 outstanding books.
By summer ?08, we should have a more concrete date for the implementation for new BD software that might complement Voyager in terms of blocking and billing patrons. Items would be checked out through the circulation system. The directors meeting in April will discuss current and future BD system.
Committee agrees to wait until the new software is introduced before making changes in current practices.
Voyager
Voyager has been set to show the due time of items (convenient for short term loans); committee members approve of format in the test system, and Jesse will move forward to bring it to the live system and enable viewing from patron info.
ARES
ARES course reserves management system is under consideration as an addition to our current system (Blackboard). Some of the major pros/cons:
- Faculty can use it to manage items
- Can work in conjunction with BB or as a stand alone product
- Ability to archive reserve requests
- Staff workflow queues would allow more transparency for non reserve users
- Interaction with <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Copyright Clearance Center(if we choose to turn on this feature)
- Would replace online request forms
- *No interaction with Voyager(other than Z39.50 searching); we will still need to put items into Voyager
Possible pilot (which would be completely functional), would take place in fall 2008 with implementation in spring 2009. Syracuse University is the closest institution using ARES (about 2 yrs.). Jesse will talk to Syracuse about a field trip to gather info and coordinate a report to PSEC. Committee for Syracuse trip: Carmen, Jesse, Joanne, Nancy, Tom Trutt and Tony Del Plato
Review of Borrowing Program
Because there are many issues and units have varying viewpoints for non Cornell library card holders, this issue will be brought to PSEC and will involve a committee to review the many issues, some of which are:
- Number of items permitted
- Restrictions to regional area
- Maintaining relationship with non- Cornell affiliates
- Push back from faculty because of decrease in duplicates
- Units with special concerns(Music, state libraries)
