Access Services Committee Committee Meeting January 15, 2008 10:30 AM 273 Law Agenda: Indefinite Loan Periods Common Spot Request for 3 new Voyager locations Library Card Holders Future Agenda Item Minutes: In attendance: Carmen Blankinship, Barbara Berger Eden, Caitlin Finlay, Cammie Hoffmier, Joanne Leary, Nancy Moore, Stacie Rogers, and Lenora Schneller Carmen welcomed Caitlin Finlay as a new member of the committee. Indefinite Loan Periods Anne Kenney asked for a study and report on the impact of the indefinite loan policy. A committee was formed from a subset of the Access Services Committee. The whole Committee reviewed the sub committee?s report and approved it. As requested, the report will be sent to Anne Kenney. Common Spot The library web site redesign team wants feedback on Common Spot. Boris Michev is the person who handles Common Spot for Access Services. Carmen will ask Boris to write a short assessment and email it to us. Joanne commented that Common Spot is a difficult format. The readability is not great and the structure is not easily navigated. One has to be a very savvy computer user to overwrite the style sheet. Request for 3 new Voyager locations Wason, Echols and South Asia are requesting that medium rare books being sent to the Annex be given new locations: Sasa, ranx, ech, ranx, and was, ranx Cammie pointed out that the Annex Library?s automated location flip program would undo all the work done at Olin before the books were sent. Writing a new program to accommodate these books would disrupt the workflow at the Annex since they then could not process regular Annex books on the same day they were processing these medium rare books. Cammie suggested using subfield k as was done with the Icelandic collection. We need more information about why it is thought that these designations are necessary. Since Zoe couldn?t make this meeting, we decided to defer further discussion until the next month. Library Card Holders There is no written policy about who is eligible to purchase library cards. Almost anyone can walk in and buy one. We don?t sell library cards to students currently enrolled in any high school or college. The libraries at Hobart and William-Smith, IC, and Syracuse purchase library cards for their faculty. All teachers in the city of Ithaca are eligible for free cards. Should all teachers in Tompkins County be eligible? Should there be an area restriction on who can have a card? If so, what should it be? No one had very strong feelings about this issue since there are currently only about 400 library card holders and it is not a big problem. Carmen will ask PSEC and LMT to consider the issue. Future Agenda Item It was suggested that we explore a means of sending some kind of notice to students who are graduating asking them to check their book lists and return their library books before they leave campus.
