Assessment and Usability Committee Committee Meeting
January 12, 2006 10:58 AM
Olin 106

Agenda:
A special meeting of the Assessment and Usability Committee and  representatives from the ReDS Committee and the Integrated Framework Usability Sub-group to discuss mutual usability issues.

Minutes:
The Assessment and Usability Committee, The ReDS Committee represented by Zsuzsa Koltay and the Integrated Framework, Usability Sub-Group represented by Angela Horne and Susette Newberry met to discuss our mutual work with assessment and usability.

I. Announcement of a training opportunity

Adam reported that he has negotiated a change in price ($1500 per day with no LITA involvement, down from $5500 per day) for the proposed 2 day Rochester workshops on Design Process and Usability.  If we proceed there are 2 possible times that they are available to come, Feb 20-22 or anytime in May.  All three groups were very interested in this opportunity and agreed that we should try to for February.  We will approach PSEC for permission to make the invitation as well as some possible funding for the event. We will also approach other groups in the library interested in assessment and usability for further funds.

II. Discussion of each group’s roles and interest in usability

The ReDS group is responsible for many of the library user interfaces including the Library Catalog and all of the Find services and will be interested in usability particularly as several of these will be undergoing major changes.  A group will be working on a replacement for Find Databases and a new group has been formed to look at metasearch options to replace the current Find Articles.

The Integrated Framework, Usability Sub-group is part of the Priority 1 team and they are focusing on the usability aspects of a proposed integrated system for searching our digital collections. They are currently working on a review of the literature. The Assessment and Usability Committee agreed that it would be a good idea to work on this together.  We will set up a time to meet and discuss the relevant literature and work together on an integrated list of the most useful sources, instead of having groups do this on their own.

Both groups agreed that the help they would like to see from the Assessment and Usability Committee would consist of training (such as the proposed Rochester sessions) as well as an FAQ to help guide them through the process.

Items that could be included in an FAQ included:

How many users to test, how to recruit them, how to pay them, rooms available for user testing, how to take down the data, how to analyze the data, who to go to for further assistance, etc….

The Assessment and Usability Team agreed that it was our role to create such a set of documents to help project teams incorporate usability into their process and we would be working on this over the spring semester.

Minutes prepared by Maureen Morris.
