Announcements

 i. Linda Miller will be attending the 2 day LITA User Centered Design event at ALA Midwinter conference in January.  She will attend our next committee meeting so we can let her know what we are interested in having her focus on for us.

[Inserted are the descriptions of the events provided by Linda]

User Centered Design: Design Process
Thursday, January 19, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
In this interactive workshop, participants will learn about a design process for managing digital projects within a library context. Using examples, lecture, and exercises we will discuss staff skills and responsibilities, artifacts of the design process (items that staff create during the design process), and communication channels. Web technologies and standards are included as a framework for the design process.
Speakers: Brenda Reeb, University of Rochester; David Lindahl, University of Rochester

User Centered Design: Usability
Friday, January 20, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

In this interactive workshop, participants will learn about usability theory and methodology within a library context. Participants will practice several types of tests and construct test instruments. We will review the major administrative aspects of usability testing including how to manage test results, equipment, recruitment, and human subjects testing exemption. This is registration for day one of a two day event. If you wish to register for both days of this event, please see the combined event registration listing below. Speakers: Brenda Reeb, University of Rochester; David Lindahl, University of Rochester Tickets

ii. The possibility of inviting Rochester folks to Cornell was discussed again and Kathy will talk with Anne about making an invitation.

iii. Maureen showed the PSEC website which Jenn Colt-Demaree is developing.  There is a section for our committee and Maureen will be the contact with Jenn to add our content there.  This will be our first experience with a CommonSpot based site so it might a good opportunity for everyone in the group to see how this works.  Maureen will see if the whole group can be given access as content providers.

iv. Nan will send the charge and the notes we made suggesting changes to Maureen who will compile them and send them out to the group.

v. Linda Beins will be leaving the group as she has accepted a position at Finger Lakes Library System – congratulations Linda!

Polices and Projects to Consider

The remainder of the meeting was a brainstorming session on policies and projects that our committee should consider.

Policies that the group felt were part of our charge included: confidentiality – including the use of anonymous quotes in publicity, human subjects, coordination of the sampling of our voyager database to prevent user fatigues, dissemination of results.  We would like to create a policy framework that would address these issues.

The committee agreed that we would most benefit from finding out what kind of user research is being done now in the library, how it is being done and what the policy issues are. The committee therefore decided to host a brown-bag/forum to bring together people doing user-based research as well as those who are interested in doing this in the future for a discussion.

Adam proposed the following matrix as a way of framing the discussion on policies as they relate to particular methodologies:

 Methodology Privacy
Fatigue
(of both users and facts)
Dissemination
Stewardship
 Surveys
 Individual Users

 Focus Groups

 Transaction Logs

 Surveys triggered by the system

 Other research

  • Training needs and opportunities also relate to this matrix.  Should training be entitled/required for particular methodologies?
  • The group may also want to look at providing guidance in choosing a methodology – by creating or adopting a decision-tree.  Kathy will look at Babbie’s ork for ideas on this and bring them back to the group.
