Announcements
-
Susanne Whitaker substituted for Kornelia Tancheva as recorder for this meeting.
-
Ellie reported that PSEC wants minutes of committee meetings to be archived on the Web site. Leah needs to add recent minutes. In addition, committees are asked to submit an estimate of projected expenses or financial needs for their programs or other activities this year. Tony mentioned that we will need money for the retreat being planned for late summer. Exact costs are unknown, but might include an honorarium, refreshments, and room rental. Tony will submit a description along with a rough estimate when completed and approved by the committee.
-
Ellie announced that Camille Andrews from Mann Library will be replacing Kornelia Tancheva on this committee.
Update and Demonstration of WebBridge
Jesse Koennecke gave a demonstration of WebBridge, the open URL resolver software that will replace Endeavor’s LinkFinderPlus for “Find it at Cornell” full-text link connections. It will be implemented during a 2-week transition period beginning on March 20. At this point, they are doing cosmetic work that will provide a foundation for added features in the future, such as delivery services. During this period, it will be necessary for Ed Zieba to identify and make changes in various native databases to replace the pointers.
The “Get It” Team recently decided on the terminology to brand the services provided. As a result, all ”Find It at Cornell” links will be replaced by WebBridge “Get It! Cornell” buttons. The number of databases with “Get It! Cornell” links will be expanded and be located at points where patrons have found what they want and then need to obtain the item or request a copy. Tony asked for a list of databases for which these WebBridge links will be available.
Jesse showed an example of an existing LinkFinderPlus display and a new WebBridge page. The same order will be retained (e.g., the order in which patrons should try to obtain items)—Full Text, Library Catalogs (ISSN/ISBN and Title searches), Interlibrary Loan, and Additional Services (RefWorks). It was recommended that jargon be avoided and terminology should clarify the connection options. For example, there was concern whether patrons really understand the differences between ISSN and Title searches. WebBridge will offer more flexibility and options for setting up ILL links as well. Potentially, any connections that send or receive open URL’s could be included under “Additional Services” in the future.
Jesse asked for feedback now or later. In particular, we wondered what type of instruction support or terminology might be used on the WebBridge pages. For example, an “Ask a Librarian” link could be added to each page.
In general, WebBridge will provide more local control to add and make changes, be more full featured, and be less error-prone or subject to dead links.
RefWorks Training Update
Tony reported that 17 individuals have already signed up to the RefWorks training session on February 17 so there are still 8 places remaining.
New Student Orientation Guide Update
Tony read the description for CUL’s Library Technology Fair on the New Student Orientation flier and indicated that updates must be submitted by February 28. Tony will send the text out as a pdf for members to review the listing and provide suggestions for wording and other changes.
Background and content of past technology fairs were discussed. Initially, the fairs were held in various libraries (ILR and Engineering) before moving to Uris Library and currently to the Libe Café in Olin. It was agreed that the Café is a central and ideal location. It will likely continue to be held on Tuesday. Deb felt that subject oriented displays are often difficult to organize and that the topics might be more technology oriented or generic in nature to appeal to a wider or diverse audience, such as how to set up wireless connections as well as information about the new “Get It” services and RefWorks. Thad suggested removing “technology” to highlight “e-services”, which would expand the possibilities. While technology may have been trendy a few years ago, it now seems heavy and archaic. It was also suggested that “refreshments” should be added as a further enticement.
Planning for Instruction Coordinator Meeting
Tony will explore dates and times for the instruction coordinators “summit” meeting to be held sometime between semesters or the end of this year. It will bring coordinators together informally to discuss issues related to instruction. A note will be send to coordinators in all campus libraries soon asking for their participation. Feedback will help in the planning process.
ACRL Immersion ‘07
Tony reported that he had received positive responses to his notice regarding hosting an ACRL Immersion meeting. All agreed it would be a lot of work. The ACRL Immersion ’06 meeting will be held in Boston. If a national meeting, ACRL will do most of the organizing, but locals will be required to handle most of the work for regional meetings. Thad agreed to investigate the options and requirements further and report back to the committee.
Date and Location for Next Meeting
The next monthly meeting will be held on March 14, 2006 at the Veterinary College at a room location to be announced.
