Minutes:

  1. Doris Smith (Management Library) made her pitch about the formation of a workshop/brown bag session on how units put together web guides. As stated in her handout, the purpose of the session(s) is “to learn more about CUL, to appreciate the breadth of the collections and the dynamic way our libraries are providing web access to our students and the world.”

  2. It was decided that on April 24th we will move forth and have a brown bag lunch featuring staff from Mann and ILR regarding the development of their web-based subject guides. It was determined that the informal lunchtime hour fits best with most people’s schedule. The session will take place on the second floor of Mann Library at 1-2pm.

  3. Camille mentioned that Mihoko Hosoi sent out an email announcement that the Hotel Library has created a database that may fit in with the theme of subject based web guide presentation (Hospitality Knowledge Base at http://www.nestlelib.cornell.edu/research/faqs/faqsearch.html).  The Committee hopes to organize a second brown bag in May that will include Mihoko, Kornelia Tancheva, and Angela Horne.

  4. Camille will finalize the April 24th brown bag, and Tony Cosgrave will work on the May brown bag.

  1. Lance Heidig led the discussion on the possibility of bringing up Jerilyn Veldof, author of the book, Creating the One-Shot Library Workshop: A Step-By-Step Guide. It was agreed that Veldof is worth bringing up and might hold two sessions--one open to the public and a private one with CUL instruction librarians. It was also mentioned that it would be nice to tie in various area librarians outside of Cornell. The date of her coming to Cornell has not been determined. Lance and Camille will co-write a letter to Veldof to see about her availability and get a feel as to what she can offer.

  1. Tony mentioned that he and Kornelia had a meeting with Paul Sawyer, Director of the Knight Institute. They talked about the possibility of CUL collaborating with the Knight Institute and starting a subject based writing course with a heavy focus on research. In connection to this, Tony pointed out the book, Centers For Learning: Writing Centers and Libraries In Collaboration, edited by James K. Elmborg and Sheril Hook.
