Announcements and updates:

Camille provided an update on the Information Fluency Team’s initiative (http://www.library.cornell.edu/staffweb/PriorityObjectives/committees.html#3).  She and Thomas Mills had a meeting with Vice Provost Michele Moody-Adams to discuss funding for the proposal.  She was very supportive of the group’s plan.  It is very much in line with her priorities.

Recap May Instruction brown bag on web guides:

Eric reported that the attendance was great (standing room only)!  The two presenters, Mihoko Hosoi and Fred Muratori, provided a good variety of material.  Eric was very interested to learn how collaborative the web guide development is at Hotel.  Fred gave a good overview of the wide range of guides developed by CRIO including those developed for individual classes.  There were lots of good questions.  Bob Kibbee suggested a forum on the future of web guides.

Discuss additional training sessions for library instructors:

The committee agreed that there is sufficient interest to warrant more sessions on subject guides as well as instruction guides and tutorials.  The committee plans to organize additional sessions next semester.

Update on guest speaker for one-shot instruction session event:

Lance provided an update on plans for a one-shot instruction session event. The Instruction Committee held a forum titled, “Rifle, not Buckshot: The Art of the One Shot Session” in December 2006.  The turn out was great and there was tremendous interest in the topic.  At the session Lance alerted everyone to a recent book and ACRL presentation by Jerilyn R. Veldof.  The book is titled Creating the one-shot library workshop: a step-by-step guide. The table of contents is available at  http://www.loc.gov/catdir/toc/ecip064/2005033222.html. A description of the workshop is available at http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlevents/creatingtheoneshot.htm.  Lance contacted the author to see if she would be interested in coming to Cornell.  She is and the committee agreed to plan on having her come in the spring to address the Academic Assembly and present a half-day retreat.

Report on joint meeting with Reference and Outreach committee regarding fall orientation:

S.O.S. for Information Literacy workshop:

Tony will be attending this workshop on June 18th in Syracuse.  The goal is for attendees to help build a database of information literacy teaching material for higher education.  Tony distributed the guidelines and asked committee members to send him suggestions for material to enter into the database.

Committee membership:

The committee bid farewell to Deb Lamb-Deans and Susanne Whitaker who have completed their two-year terms on the committee.  The committee thanked them for their valuable contributions over the past two years.  Thomas Mills has agreed to join the Instruction Committee.  It was suggested by PSEC that we not fill the other vacancy at this time.  The committee agreed to see if it could manage with one less member for now.
