Announcements and updates:
1. Tony has sent out the “Noteworthy Teaching Learning Initiative Survey” to the Instruction Committee and Instruction Coordinators. Though the official deadline for returning the survey is Feb. 15 it is fluid for now.
2. Lance has put the semester co-teaching he is currently doing on LibGuides.
3. Since not many people are using Wilson Web CX databases the Instruction Committee will not host the training event. However, Tony will forward the information, including the dates and times of the training events, to CUL.
4. Ken Bolton emailed Tony indicating his interest in joining the Instruction Committee as a new member. Those who were present at today’s meeting endorsed the idea.
Agenda items:
- November, December and January meeting minutes have been approved.
- SciFinder: Leah is going to offer two training sessions for librarians, one on Feb. 19 and the other in March. SciFinder has various kinds of interfaces and smart searching features. Leah plans to organize her training with an overview as the first part, followed by a research topic with hands-on practice. Announcement of the training will be distributed by Tony in the name of the Instruction Committee.
- Logistics for retreat on one-shot instruction sessions. Lance has worked out the schedule details for Jerilyn Veldof’s presentation at Cornell. There will be a limit of 35 people. A dinner of 10 with the speaker is booked. The cost of the event will be split between the instruction committee and the academic assembly. Lance will announce the event to CU-Lib with the speaker’s bio. Tony will invite David Way in Cornell’s Center for Learning and Teaching and Clare van den Blink in ATC to the event.
- iClicker training: 50 iClickers arrived at Cornell. They are placed in two locations, one of which is Room 201 in the library. Logistics will be written up as to the checkout and use of these iClickers. Instruction Committee will organize trainings. It may start with a panel discussion with experienced users of iClickers from the library sharing their knowledge and skills. Tony will set up a date in the second week of March for the first training.
- Meeting with Instruction Coordinators debriefing and review results of the needs assessment of library instructors: The instruction coordinators meeting had good turnout and discussion (see January minutes) and many of the instruction committee initiatives that are scheduled or in the planning stages will address the key interests the needs survey identified in Active Learning and Outcome Based Teaching, Student Learning Styles, How to Motivate Students and Stimulate Learning, and Information and Training with New Classroom Technologies.
- Library Instruction Partner Program (LIPP). Draft of application was already sent out by Tony. A possible improvement of the application is to list a couple of sample items to demonstrate what LIPP will offer. A kick-off event after announcing LIPP to the CU-Lib was discussed.
