Usability and User Studies Committee

·        Goal – Promote user centered culture

·        In the past year, the Committee has been building hardware and software capability for usability testing; their detailed work is posted on its wiki

·        One of the challenges of the committee is that it is volunteer based and it is hard to assign to members projects with deadlines.

·        The Committee needs a testing space.  PSEC suggested the Kirby room – the request was sent to Lee Cartmill for approval

·        Committee charge has been revised (handout)

·        PSEC finds some language in the revised charge unclear.  PSEC believes that usability testing is very important for the library.  The library should take full advantage of the establishment of U&US and the investment the library has made so far to outfit the usability testing capability.  PSEC would like to define clearly the charge of the U&US Committee so to address the needs of both usability testing training for CUL staff and conducting actual usability testing.

·        PSEC believes that a clearer charge would also allow the members of the Committee to  have a clear sense of direction and plan their level of commitment for the Committee’s projects.

·        PSEC will invite Adam Chandler, the Chair, to the Jan. 23rd meeting.

RLG/OCLC

·        Cornell sent Jesse Koennecke and John Saylor to represent CUL at the Nov. RLG/OCLC Program, “When Print Hits the Fan: Collaborations Approach to Managing Print Collections in the Digital Age.”

·        PSEC thinks that many staff in CUL would be interested in a report on the conference by Jesse and John and its implications for Cornell.

o       Kizer will pursue Public Service Director of Large Research Libraries Discussion Group

ACRL/ULS

·        Pat showed the agenda for the meeting which Anne Kenney will attend.
