---

Agenda:

Minutes:

Guest:     Keene Silfer

1)      CUL system-wide guidelines/best practices for computer security (assemble group with public services and IT reps?)  (Zsuzsa Koltay and Keene Silfer)

·        Keene Silfer attended to share information about where we are now and where we are going

·        Keene and Oliver Habicht have met with Steve Schuster (Director of IT Security)

o       PSEC reviewed a document prepared by Steve Schuster outlining mitigation steps and strategies to reduce security risks

o       Document is purely IT focused and does not consider the specific needs of CUL

o       There are public service considerations to take into account for points # 3 and # 5 which involve limiting user access

·        What has already been done to Endowed Library Public Computing networks:

o       Subnets do not allow incoming connections from off-campus

o       Deep Freeze prevents permanent changes to machines

·        June 1st, Campus-wide network registry policy goes into effect

ACTION ITEMS:

ü      Oliver Habicht and Keene Silfer will flesh out the library’s take on Steve Schuster’s document

ü      Revisit idea for creating a standing body with technical and public services representatives previously discussed at 9/24/03 PSEC meeting

2)      CUL system-wide Lost Book Searching Procedures (Zsuzsa Koltay)

·        Current procedure for a lost book involves sending an email message to the Access Services list

·        Feedback is not always received, so it is unclear whether the book is truly lost or if the request to search for the book is unheeded

·        There is no written policy governing the searching for lost books

·        Since the advent of library to library delivery, the lack of a standardized policy has become more apparent

ACTION ITEMS:

ü      Carmen will take this issue to ASSC and develop an email format to use for a lost book search

3)      Chat Reference Software Review (Kathy Chiang)

·        PSEC reviewed the documents prepared by Virgina Cole, Nan Hyland, and Nancy Skipper which recommend:

·        re-subscribe to 24/7 chat software for 6 months and seriously pursue the idea of switching to Docutek software in January

·        renew our subscription to QuestionPoint's Global Reference service

ACTION ITEMS:

ü      PSEC agreed with all recommendations and advised to fax the renewal form for the QuestionPoint contract

ü      Anne will talk to Lee about funding/better budget line

4)      Strategic Planning for PSEC

·        PSEC reviewed LMT’s 10 goals for 2004/05—small groups will meet to discuss each goal, and a report is due to Sarah by June 18th

·        PSEC identified 5 of the 10 goals as having strong public service implications:

o       #1:  Investigate the Next Generation Gateway

o       #4:  Work with faculty to articulate information literacy competency requirements in each discipline and to develop strategies to incorporate information literacy competencies into the curriculum at all levels

            o       #5:  Expand Outreach

            o       #7:  Document Delivery

            o       #9:  Scholarly Communications

·        PSEC identified 3 of the 10 goals as having a potential public component:

o       #2:  Build an OAIS-compliant system for managing Cornell’s digital assets

            o       #3:  “Mass” Digitization

            o       #8:  E-Publishing

ACTION ITEMS:

ü      PSEC will focus solely on Strategic Planning for its next meeting

5)      Adding an "Ask a Librarian" link to records in RLIN's Eureka databases that will connect clickers to our local Ask a Librarian service  (Anne Kenney)

·        The Chat Software Review Committee (Virginia Cole, Nan Hyland, and Nancy Skipper) have already investigated this issue

ACTION ITEMS:

ü      The Chat Software Review Committee can send its recommendations to PSEC via email

6)      Issue of INSPEC & NTIS raised with IRPC (Angela Horne)

·        DRC sought feedback from IRPC regarding changing our INSPEC & NTIS provider

·        Subject experts should take specific interest in those developments that affect their particular areas

·        PSEC does not feel this will have any major public service impact

The next PSEC meeting is scheduled for Wed. June 23, 2004 1:30-3:00pm, 702 Olin Library
