Public Services Executive Committee Committee Meeting May 26, 2004 12:00 PM --- Agenda: Minutes: Attendees: Anne Kenney, Pat Schafer, Angela Horne, Zsuzsa Koltay, Kathy Chiang, Carmen Blankinship, and Eli Brown Guest: Keene Silfer 1) CUL system-wide guidelines/best practices for computer security (assemble group with public services and IT reps?) (Zsuzsa Koltay and Keene Silfer) · Keene Silfer attended to share information about where we are now and where we are going · Keene and Oliver Habicht have met with Steve Schuster (Director of IT Security) o PSEC reviewed a document prepared by Steve Schuster outlining mitigation steps and strategies to reduce security risks o Document is purely IT focused and does not consider the specific needs of CUL o There are public service considerations to take into account for points # 3 and # 5 which involve limiting user access · What has already been done to Endowed Library Public Computing networks: o Subnets do not allow incoming connections from off-campus o Deep Freeze prevents permanent changes to machines · June 1st, Campus-wide network registry policy goes into effect ACTION ITEMS: ü Oliver Habicht and Keene Silfer will flesh out the library’s take on Steve Schuster’s document ü Revisit idea for creating a standing body with technical and public services representatives previously discussed at 9/24/03 PSEC meeting
2) CUL system-wide Lost Book Searching Procedures (Zsuzsa Koltay) · Current procedure for a lost book involves sending an email message to the Access Services list · Feedback is not always received, so it is unclear whether the book is truly lost or if the request to search for the book is unheeded · There is no written policy governing the searching for lost books · Since the advent of library to library delivery, the lack of a standardized policy has become more apparent ACTION ITEMS: ü Carmen will take this issue to ASSC and develop an email format to use for a lost book search
3) Chat Reference Software Review (Kathy Chiang) · PSEC reviewed the documents prepared by Virgina Cole, Nan Hyland, and Nancy Skipper which recommend: · re-subscribe to 24/7 chat software for 6 months and seriously pursue the idea of switching to Docutek software in January · renew our subscription to QuestionPoint's Global Reference service ACTION ITEMS: ü PSEC agreed with all recommendations and advised to fax the renewal form for the QuestionPoint contract ü Anne will talk to Lee about funding/better budget line
4) Strategic Planning for PSEC · PSEC reviewed LMT’s 10 goals for 2004/05—small groups will meet to discuss each goal, and a report is due to Sarah by June 18th · PSEC identified 5 of the 10 goals as having strong public service implications: o #1: Investigate the Next Generation Gateway o #4: Work with faculty to articulate information literacy competency requirements in each discipline and to develop strategies to incorporate information literacy competencies into the curriculum at all levels o #5: Expand Outreach o #7: Document Delivery o #9: Scholarly Communications · PSEC identified 3 of the 10 goals as having a potential public component: o #2: Build an OAIS-compliant system for managing Cornell’s digital assets o #3: “Mass” Digitization o #8: E-Publishing ACTION ITEMS: ü PSEC will focus solely on Strategic Planning for its next meeting
5) Adding an "Ask a Librarian" link to records in RLIN's Eureka databases that will connect clickers to our local Ask a Librarian service (Anne Kenney) · The Chat Software Review Committee (Virginia Cole, Nan Hyland, and Nancy Skipper) have already investigated this issue ACTION ITEMS: ü The Chat Software Review Committee can send its recommendations to PSEC via email
6) Issue of INSPEC & NTIS raised with IRPC (Angela Horne) · DRC sought feedback from IRPC regarding changing our INSPEC & NTIS provider · Subject experts should take specific interest in those developments that affect their particular areas · PSEC does not feel this will have any major public service impact
