1)  Discussion on the Library of Congress’ decision to cease providing series authority control; with guests David Banush and Karen Calhoun (David sent out a handout explaining the situation before the meeting)

§   Effective June 1, the Library of Congress (LC) is no longer tracing series statements for those monographic titles issued as part of a series

§   What are the options?

  • Manually edit items with series statements out of the fastcataloging stream; this option would need 3 more full time employees
  • Continue to accept LC catalog records for fastcataloging, which will cause a gradual reduction in the users’ ability to search by authorized forms for series titles
  • Look into the software tool for the Voyager system that Gary Strawn (Northwestern University) is developing; it will use algorithms to compare series statements in LC records with the authority-controlled form and flip the untraced statements to traced headings
  • Make a list of items in series that will always need to be tracked
