Agenda:
PSEC Agenda for meeting Wednesday, October 12, 2005, 2-3:30 in 106 Olin Library
1) 2-2:30: Visual Resources website development (Lance Heidig and Oya Rieger)
2) 2:30-3:00: Clarification of CUL policy for providing access to networked electronic resources (Jim LeBlanc and Zoe Stewart-Marshall)
3) Policy on Public Displays
Minutes:
Attendees: Eleanor Brown, Kathy Chiang, Anne Kenney, Zsuzsa Koltay, Xin Li, Oya Rieger, Pat Schafer, Scott Wicks
1) Visual Resources Website Development: Lance Heidig and Oya Rieger
- Oya gave a brief history on the CUL Visual Resources Group, which is composed of staff representing different functional areas (DCAPS, Library Systems, Metadata, Public Services)
- They created a webpage (PSEC received a screenshot from Lance) to represent all the visual resources (Susette Newberry and Lance Heidig coordinate the effort)
-
- Some are owned by Cornell
- Some are licensed to Cornell
- The format of the page looks a lot like Find Databases
-
- The links at the top of the page (those under “Arts and Humanities,” for example) go to a webpage with a list of databases of the images
- The middle set of links are links to software packages
- The last section of links lists “Additional Image Resources;” PSEC agreed that the Johnson Art Museum link should be added to this section
- The “Image Search Engines” link is not agreed upon yet (Lance put it on there last minute), but it may encompass sites like Google Images (PSEC thought the name should be changed to “Internet Image Search Engines”)
- There is still some debate as to where this Website should be linked off of (Find Databases, off the Gateway, etc.)
ACTION ITEMS:
ü Pat Schafer should give the Reference and Outreach committee a heads up that this will be coming their way (the Visual Resources Group may want to consider bringing both webpage designs-with and without descriptive paragraph-to Reference and Outreach
2) Clarification of CUL policy for providing access to networked electronic resources: Jim LeBlanc and Zoe Stewart-Marshall
- There are two steps planned for updating and maintaining URLs in the Voyager catalog and in other CUL databases
-
- Developing a routine for checking URLs in Find Databases and Find E-Journals
- Develop a routine for checking URLs that pop-up in other databases
- Three types of URLs that should be updated include:
-
- Directly selected URLs (chosen by selectors)
- Indirectly selected URLs (chosen by selectors)
- Preferring electronic versions over print versions
- TSEG and CDExec have already given their approvals for this Policy
- URLs will be purged first, then maintained (LTS Database Management Services doesn’t want to maintain something that doesn’t work)
- DMS will only do something (whether purging or fixing) those URLs that aren’t working (they will look at all the URLs that they are considering throwing out BEFORE they are thrown out)
- DMS will post progress reports to CU-LIB
ACTION ITEMS:
ü PSEC gives its approval for this policy
3) Policy on Public Displays
- This policy applies to Exhibits to be put in the Library (not posters which we already have display cases for)
- Concerns for public displays:
-
- How will they be handled
- How will requests be refereed
- Graffiti concerns
- Spaces available
-
- Some free standing spaces
- Display cases (really for posters only)
- “No food policy” poster space
- Some policies for public displays in Mann include:
-
- Size
- Faculty sponsorship

ACTION ITEMS:
ü Kathy Chiang to send list of Mann Library’s Policies for Public Displays
4) Discussion on Committee Charge Changes

-
- “Members will serve two year staggered appointments…”
- “PSEC will appoint a chair and the committee members and a member of PSEC will…”
- Reference and Outreach Committee
-
- Changes suggested by PSEC:
-
- “…and working groups with significant commitments to reference…”
- “…bring new ideas to the reference and outreach community and to PSEC.” Change to “…advise PSEC…”
- “…Ref & Outreach Committee’s sub-committees and affiliates:”
- Reference and Outreach should clarify their relationship with BIG before adding them as a sub-committee
