Public Services Executive Committee Committee Meeting
November 12, 2003 12:00 PM
---

Agenda:

Minutes:

Attendees:   Anne Kenney, Katherine Reagan, Pat Court, Kathy Chiang, Pat Schafer, Carmen Blankinship, Angela Horne

Identified Top Five Priorities for Public Services:

  1. CUL-wide document delivery, both electronic and physical  (possible cost ~100K)

This is a high priority. Howard, Deb, and Susan are working on the associated costs. There will be a $5 fee to patrons for EDD and departmental deliveries. This item is easy for a non-librarian audience to understand.

  1. Extending hours in some library units  (possible cost ~60K-70K)

This is a high priority.  There might be interest in extending Mann’s weekend hours once the renovation is complete.. Zsuzsa should look at Engineering’s hours- Pat will give her the radar charts from LibQUAL.  This item is easy for a non-librarian audience to understand.

  1. Enhancing users “personal control,” allowing them to find what they need on their own by making information easily accessible for independent use; Provide system-wide Web support; Enhance the Library’s ability to make its resources available where they are needed and used, beyond the Library’s physical and virtual space  (possible cost ~ 80K)

This is a high priority.  When taken together, 3, 7, and 10 all speak to the same end:  increasing the user’s ability to get the information they need, when they need it, with little or no assistance.  Concrete examples:  Borrow Direct.  Pat Schafer will try to get some hard comments from Linda that point to this issue.  Need 1 FTE dedicated IT staff for public services enhancements.  Could develop a current employee who can be trained. Find ways to discuss this issue that will make sense to the non-librarian.

  1. Information literacy programs for undergraduates  (possible cost ~80K)

This is a high priority.  There could be an Information Literacy Librarian position, or 2 FTE. Vet library has a 1 credit course co-taught by library staff and faculty on information needs. CALS has an information literacy requirement.  Need to identify what the specific colleges require of their students- what curriculum can be determined at the college level?

  1. Greater focus on information quality: provide guidance on the relative quality of the information we provide through “normative” metadata and other means   (possible cost ~70K)

This is a high priority. This one desperately needs a layman’s re-write, but is an important item.

Total ~ 400K of reallocated savings
