Marcy Rosenkrantz and George Kozak provided an overview of the organization of information in DSpace and demonstrated some browsing and search capabilities.

All in attendance engaged in an open discussion about the database, its goals, its target audiences, and its contents.

Based on the discussion, the following “action items” emerged regarding the database’s user interfaces:

·          On the pop-up screen users encounter when they try to access a restricted object, propose some text explaining why the object is not “open”  [PSEC R&O Committee]

·          Submit a NERF for DSpace to be cataloged [Virginia]

·          If possible, have labels on the submission form match the labels on the search and display screens.  For example, “subject” word submissions should display as “subject” words (not “keywords”) on the object records.  [George]

·          Need to provide links in the catalog to full-text books available in DSpace.  [Can George identify the books and PSEC R&O Committee can follow-up with the catalog updates?]

·          Proposed text for difference between “registering” to submit information and “registering” to receive updates [PSEC R&O Committee]

·          Add text on the home page that this is a “growing collection” (?) – yet, George mentioned that a similar message was removed.

The committee offered public-services liaison assistance to George and Marcy.  Virginia Cole volunteered to be the liaison.

Next meeting of the PSEC R&O Committee:
