  • Jan-June meeting times

  •  Distribution of remaining "ask" bookmarks and stickers (Susette)
  •  R&O committee possibly working up a web page or two offering information for non-Cornell users of the library, primarily about access and services (Susette)
  • Adding IM to the Ask a Librarian service lineup (Susette)

Minutes:

Attending: Jim Morris-Knower, Matt Morrison, Susette Newberry, Nancy Skipper, Kornelia Tancheva

Calendar discussion: we will continue to hold 90-minute forums every 2nd or 3rd Tuesday from 10:30 to 12, with 90-minute committee meetings one week prior to the forum.

December Forum (on Dec. 18) will include five speakers: Mary Ochs (Zambia), Maureen Morris (International Librarians’ Roundtable), Sarah How (Greece), Thomas Mills (legal research for the Association of Comparative Law & International Law Librarians’ conference at CU last October), Stuart Basefsky (France?). Virginia Cole will give 10-minute update on the status of the Alumni and Friends portal.

Spring Forums:

  • CU Library Vision Team forum (January) : Adam Chandler will lead a forum on the library’s Fall 2008 implementation of WorldCat Local.
  • Possible retreat with the Instruction Committee. They will bring in Jerilyn Veldof, a speaker from Minnesota, in March. She wrote Creating the One-Shot Library Workshop. Ms. Veldof is Director of Undergraduate Initiatives for the University of Minnesota Libraries. Could we work with them on a related event?
  • Possible repeat of the marketing forum in April or May.
  • CD Exec join meeting?
  • RSRS system: Jean Poland has submitted a report to PSEC on the LMT discussion of RSRS. Topics: statistical validity, technical bugs, should we keep same weeks? Is CUL interested in marketing this to the library community?
  • Columbia Reference Symposium in March, “Beyond the Desk.” If there are any CU presenters, they could also present papers to CUL audience. Or we could use it as a discussion topic for a possible brainstorming session? We might be able to tie it into a “best practices in Reference” topic: how to maintain quality in a constantly shifting environment.
  • Ethnographic faculty study similar to CUL’s is taking place at Syracuse. Could we possibly invite them down for a joint discussion session?
  • Lib Guides Showcase, possibly with Instruction Committee & LibGuides Web Vision team

Could we start a new monthly series to promote more widespread familiarity with databases? This is a possible area of collaboration with CD Exec; people with core expertise in particular databases could focus on inter-disciplinary databases, on topics such as business, economics, etc., and share expertise on a casual basis.

We need budget figures as soon as possible! Xin suggests we adjust our thinking about ways to spend the huge budget allocation for faculty coffee coupons.

There will be an R.A. fair at the end of January. Jim M-K will keep us notified on date, staffing needs for booth, etc.

Where are the CU Library Guides and are there enough left for January orientation needs? Susette uncovered 750 guides held by Olin/Uris Access Services, which is probably enough to meet needs through most of the Spring Semester. Susette will be in touch with Library Communications to see if they can’t send out a query about quantities needed throughout the library.

Could we examine the information available about policies for non-Cornell users of the Cornell libraries? How is the information presented online and are policies, logistics, etc., easy to find for our visitors? We will look at information provided by 201 Olin on the PSA site, as well as information from Access Services on their pages, and see if it’s clear.

The Outreach Portal, sponsored by the office of the Assoc. Provost for Outreach (Stephen Hamilton, http://www.cornell.edu/outreach/), is going public this week. Amanda Kittelberger, who manages the site, is telecommuting, but will be in town in January and may be able to meet with representatives from the library. Susette is keeping track.

Nancy Skipper: Update from the Digital Reference Committee on I.M. Dig. Ref. Comm. Looked at I.M., and concluded that the current chat software is preferable. Faculty seem to prefer the 24/7 access that Question Point (only available for the moment via the chat software) makes possible. IM seems to be more convenient & probably preferred by students, but it does not provide the archiving/transcripting of sessions, etc., that QP does. Kornelia noted that Duke recently replaced their chat software with IM and that their statistics skyrocketed as a result.

Also consensus that we need clearer information from a central point on the CUL Gateway about reference service hours, and a list of reference service coordinators. Nancy Skipper will e-mail the Public Services list, and Jim will make an announcement about it at the beginning of the December forum.
