Minutes, Reference and Outreach Committee

September 11, 2006

Attending: Jim Morris-Knower (co-chair), Jill Powell (co-chair and recorder), Virginia Cole, Kornelia Tancheva, Bronwen Bledsoe, Susette Newberry, Thomas Mills

Jim and Jill are the co-chairs this year. Jim will be the facilitator for the fall semester and Jill will take minutes at both meetings and forums. In the spring semester they’ll switch roles.

Jim has reserved the next Ref & Outreach committee meeting time for

Monday Oct. 18 9:30-11 am. Meetings will be in106 Olin.

The group discussed content for the upcoming Forum meetings. Since there was not enough time to cover outreach last year, the group though we should devote several meetings to it. The group discussed various types of outreach and potential speakers, such as librarians and archivists who have organized programs for various campus groups, alumni and student groups. Also: embedded librarians; librarians involved with scholarly communication visits; exhibitions; Cornell Professional Development Day for Teachers (March 2006); non-library speakers, such as a high school teacher or someone from the office of the vice-provost for outreach.

We want to make sure there is enough time for discussion at each meeting. There are technological tools to facilitate outreach (blogs, teleconferencing) and we could have a session on that.

Jill reserved dates for Reference & Outreach Forums for the next 9 months. They are all in 106 Olin from 9 am – 10:30 am and the programs are tentative:

Jill sent out a questionnaire to all Cornell libraries about outreach and will compile a handout on who’s doing what based on the responses. She will send a reminder to those libraries who have not yet submitted theirs. She will distribute it at the meeting Sept 20.

Jim will facilitate the Sept 20 meeting. He will start by mentioning the goals of Sarah Thomas and President Skorton that are about outreach (Susette read these at the meeting). Jill can introduce the compiled outreach handout. Then the group can discuss the outreach topic.

We hope to get more ideas for speakers and topics from the general forum meeting on Sept 20.

Additional business since the meeting: In addition to the above, there is a Sept 21 visit from a Lexis/Nexis representative who will be demonstrating some new products.. Ann Korhonen has set up a date and time. Jill will send a notice about it to the cul-publicservices-l, cucd-l, and libit-l communities.
