Ref outreach meeting 8-8-07

Update on Orientation events

Susette Newberry provided an update on the Barton Undergraduate orientation and sought volunteers. Angela and Matt will be checking their schedules and will get back to Susette. Susette will need all promotion material by 3:30 p.m. on August 16.

Gateway Announcement

Jim informed the group that Ellen Marsh, Head of Library Communications has expressed an interest in promoting library services on the Gateway. The R&O committee is going to recommend that Ask a Librarian, Tours, Workshops, Chat 24/7 and Map/Hours are promoted on the Gateway. Nancy Skipper also suggested promoting walk-in-reference.

Fall Forums

Most of the meeting time was devoted to brainstorming ideas for Fall forums. The committee members suggested the following topics:

September forum - Reference Blog
October Forum - Outreach to faculty, extension and non-Cornell patrons along with a brief report on the RSRS results for the previous year.

Other Ideas: Jim M-K proposed a forum dedicated to the Class Librarian (see ACRL article); Nancy suggested a forum on Marketing of Reference Services.

Grad Student Reception

Jim M-K announced that the graduate student reception would take place on Sunday, August 19, 2007 and he would be staffing the booth at that orientation.

Ref Stats Sampling

Jim M-K quickly mentioned that Reference Statistics sampling weeks were decided and the schedule was in place. Baseema will send out reminders regularly to CUL public service staff.

Ask-a-librarian Bookmark

Susette distributed the bookmark designs created by Carla and asked the committee to choose 4 designs. The committee chose ice climbers, rabbit, Godzilla and Humpty Dumpty. (Must be logged in to Confluence to view.)

Fall Meeting Times

Jim M-K told the group that he will be sending the regular meeting times to the committee members via email.

Class Librarian

Due to time constraints, this topic was not discussed in too much detail but Jim M-K suggested that it had the potential of becoming a Forum topic all by itself. Baseema suggested inviting the original Class Librarians to join the forum as special guests via a conference call.
