PCAC Committee Meeting July 19, 2005 2:00 PM 403 Olin Agenda: 1. Introducing Suzanne Cohen as new member & best wishes to departing member Deb Lamb-Deans. Also a fond farewell to Paul McMillin as he leaves CUL. [5 min] 2. News & announcements [10 min] 3. Discussion items: - Net Print pricing: Net Print's B&W pricing recently lowered to $.09 per side. CUL should be as consistent as possible with this rate. [Oliver & Michael, 20 min]
Oliver: "We should do a final vetting of this change via an announcement to PCAC (perhaps members can find out and report what proximate non-Library printer services will be charging this fall? I'm thinking printers in or really near the Libraries at ILR, Law ("law-lib1" is already at 9c), JGSM, etc.), then inform PSEC via email of the change, then post to CUL Lib when the understanding of the price change has been formally acknowledged by PSEC. At CUL(E), we're prepared to lower our rates immediately, but obviously we will want to do so in a coordinated manner with other's rate changes, and after notifying public services staff." - Duplex printing bug in Microsoft Explorer & Word (Keene, can you give us an update?) [10 min] - Meetings & minutes through the end of the year: we've had some turnover on the group since it formed last year, so we need to determine who is taking minutes at each meeting. We may need to extend the monthly meeting time to 90 minutes instead of 60, based on past meetings. Is the first Tuesday of each month from 2-3:30pm OK with everyone? Thoughts, suggestions? [15 min] 4. Wrap-up Minutes: Minutes by Paul McMillin Announcements: Suzanne Cohen welcomed, replacing Deb Lamb-Deans. Paul McMillin bid a fond farewell as he prepares to leave CUL.
Net-Print Pricing: B&W printing has gone to 9¢/side in CIT labs. Most of the library printers are at 10¢/side, except Mann has an 8¢/side "Introductory Price" through mid-August. Mann is reviewing their pricing, and PCAC generally recommends that we aim for consistency among our units, and with CIT. So it is likely that we will aim for 9¢/side unless compelling reasons suggest otherwise.
Who Controls Which Printers? Desktop Services knows about (and controls, with CUL Facilities) approximately 20 Net-Print printers across campus. Some other printers are under the control of other entities. PCAC reps from all units should send Oliver a list of printers not controlled by Desktop Services, including the following information:
The Odd Number Rounded Up Duplex Printing Bug: Duplexing has proven to work well with Xerox printers, except that from some applications, a job with an odd number of sides would round up and charge for one extra side. Keene figured out how to fix this for all apps except MS Internet Explorer. This is done by turning off Advanced Printing Features, which so far has had no known adverse effects.
Keene has reported and clarified the IE bug with Microsoft to encourage them to fix it, but MS is not making progress currently. Desktop Services will continue to try to engage Microsoft to address the problem, and we hope CIT does too.
PCAC Meetings Tuesday 2 - 3:30, once a month, will be the default meeting time. Topics for next meeting: Public Computing Policy, Net-Print Printing. Meetings in fall should move around to different libraries, and may include a tour of the hosting library (as part of the "getting to know ourselves" theme).
Public Computing Policy We have a draft policy (essentially the Mann Library policy) on a wiki at: http://culpubcomppolicies.xwiki.com/xwiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome. Edit freely. Each unit rep should get feedback on and approval (or disapproval) of the policy from public services staff.
GuestID No new news.
Software/Hardware Inventory Unit reps should update a copy of the Excel inventory (http://www.library.cornell.edu/dlit/ds/ links/cul/public/inventory/Public_computer_ inventory_esw3_20030714.xls) for their area, highlighting any changes, and sending the file on to Oliver. Name the updated file following the current naming convention, but with your NetID and the current date. Should we move this to a wiki? Can we find a way to feed our updated information to Maureen for updating the Where Do I Find feature of the Gateway? | ||
