PCAC Committee Meeting May 3, 2005 1:00 PM 106 Olin Agenda: 1) News & announcements (10 minutes - anyone?) 2) Net Print rate changes & duplexing (Michael, 20 minutes) Two announcements –
i.) As of last Friday, Mann Library is now charging $.08 per image for black and white printing via Net Print and Vendacard, and both are duplex-enabled. Mann continues to pay the 22% tariff. (See earlier message of 4/26 sent to the PCAC list on this subject.) ii.) Rick Cochran announced (tentatively) a campus-wide lowering of Net Print B&W rates. Here is his message (somewhat snipped): We will be scheduling a meeting to discuss the various options sometime in the near future. In the meantime, we would appreciate it if you would think about how changing various rates would affect your department and your customers. Here are the main parameters we have to work with, along with examples of what kinds of values might be possible. Please note that these numbers are very tentative. We should refrain from raising expectations. -- Growth in CIT Lab printing (0% -> 0%) -- Growth in Partner Lab printing (20% -> 15%) -- Basic B/W printing charge (10 cents -> 8 cents [CIT Labs]) -- Basic color printing charge (25 cents -> 25 cents [CIT Labs]) -- Tariff rate (22% -> 21%) -- Minimum tariff (2.2 cents -> 1.7 cents) Interesting questions include: -- If CIT lowers the basic B/W printing charge from 10 cents to 8 cents, will you want to make the same change in your lab? -- How much growth in printing do you project for next year? -- Can we expect any additional Partner Labs? Please bear in mind that we need to think about the effects of these parameters for FY06 - FY08. Finally, Don MacLeod and Rick MacDonald recently met with the Student Fees Commission to discuss Net-Print fees. Since the model for providing printing allocations to students at Cornell leaves that option up to the colleges and departments, we were wondering if any of you had been contacted by members of the Commission. 3) Patron log-ins for public CIT computers? (30 minutes) How would CUL respond to this message from Steve Schuster (CIT) to Oliver?
“If CIT moved to authenticated access to use CIT public lab systems would you be able to capture for me the issues that might arise within the libraries? I understand that CIT maintains a couple of labs in the libraries and I'm wondering how hard the libraries will push back if CIT would required authentication.” (Note: next PCAC meeting is June 7th in Olin 703) Minutes: Minutes taken by Laura Heisey Net-Print Net-Print was discussed at length. Mann is charging $.08 per image (not per sheet) for Net-Print and Vendacard printing through the end of summer to see if pricing sustainable. Mann still pays CIT the same tariff. Olin/Uris will need to do some number crunching in order to decide on a reasonable price for duplexed Net-Printing.
CIT is considering lowering prices for CIT and partner labs to $.08. CIT's Net-Print service will support duplexing on Xerox printers. Accel runs their own printing service with HP printers w/ duplexing with no problems. Keene has found a bug in Internet Explorer that causes certain printer drivers to miscount duplexed print jobs. He has reported this to Microsoft. Authentication There was discussion regarding authentication on public computers. Many CU libraries are obliged to provide services to the general public. Libraries will likely object to a CIT requirement to authenticate users on public computers. The issues of record retention, confidentiality, the Patriot Act, the 'chill effect', state and local laws affecting confidentiality and access to records were discussed. In many areas, CIT lab and library public computers are in fairly close proximity to each other. While consistency among computers in a given space is important, we may still wind up with a 'CIT' model and a 'Library' model in order to address the Library's need to provide services to the general public. A group has been formed to address CUL's issues with Guest ID. It was suggested that PSEC provide a formal response regarding authentication for non-CU patrons. | ||
