PCAC Committee Meeting
April 1, 2008 2:30 PM
5th Floor Conference Room, ILR Library

Agenda:

1. News & announcements (10 min)

2. Approve minutes - Maureen took them last time; Annemarie's turn this time (5 min)

Discussion topics:

3. PCAC/CIT Lab Futures forum (all, 45 min)

  • Anne Kenney wants to know if we would be interested in organizing a PCAC Forum centered around a presentation by Teresa Craighead and Clare van den Blink about the soon to be released CIT Lab Futures report. There are potential implications for the library and in particular possible opportunities for collaboration with CIT. One of the top themes that emerged from the focus groups was creating flexible space (perhaps similar to CL3) so this might have some implications for the Olin renovation as well. Teresa mentioned the Mann Public Computing space and the moveable tables resulting from this work.

Let’s discuss inviting Clare and Teresa to come report on these two studies to the library. We’ll need to determine a venue and ensure that the Olin Renovation Team and other interested folks are encouraged to attend.

4. Kiosks and Student Data Security (Laura, 20 min)

  • The new Just The Facts/Student Center prompts the user to log in via CUWebLogin, whether or not Sidecar is running. Simply quitting or logging out of Sidecar will not log them out. The user should log out of JTF/Student Center by closing *all* browser windows, or better yet, by restarting the computer.

Given the above information and your experience with how patrons use our public computers for course-enroll types of activities, do public services staff need to coordinate signage for the Library's public computers?

5. Pros & cons of new CUL guide on public computing (all, 10 min)

  • It's still not ready for prime time (http://guides.library.cornell.edu/computing) but it's interactive, so add comments where needed directly on the page. Is this a good discovery tool for users of library computing, or is it just one more system to maintain? Thoughts?
