1.    News and announcements

Oliver - Announced the formation of an operations group within ITEC to complement a digital library-focused group within ITEC. Thus, our IT-related issues requiring higher-level involvement within CUL will go to this emergent group within ITEC. And our public services-related issues requiring higher-level involvement will continue to go to PSEC.

Michael - CIT is opening a new lab in Mann Library very soon. It will have 24 machines inside the lab and 15 outside.
His ARL Spec Kit on public computing is out. Of particular note is the section at the end, called 'Notable Innovations' - we should discuss this section at some point.
Mann has hired Phil Halcomb's replacement. He starts in the end of February.

Maureen - CRIO is still in the process of hiring a Coordinator for Public Computing.

Martha - AAP is planning on installing state-of-the-art distance education equipment in the FAL's Seminar Room over spring break. It is intended for use by various classes within AAP. The City and Regional Planning Dept. has immediate plans for a distance ed. opportunity. The classroom will be supported by the college but scheduled by the library.

2.    Approve minutes

Michael will post an addendum regarding RedRover problem reporting to last month's minutes. (posted here)

Discussion topics:

3.    Clarifying members' roles

For the units of which we each represent, we bring information, issues and/or concerns from units' Public Services and ITS departments to PCAC as needed; likewise, we take information, make decisions, present ideas and so forth back to these units we represent, and route them through Public Services and ITS for their consideration as part of a continual feedback loop. We also route issues through other CUL groups when necessary, and, where appropriate, to CU IT groups. We serve as a bridge between departments within units. We make policy recommendations and occasionally act as a working group.

Mary Ochs, liaison to PSEC, checks in with PSEC ahead of our meetings to see if they want anything on our agenda.

4.    Lab hours. Managing closing due to maintenance

Mann - maintains Oracle calendars. Software change requests must be made at least 2 weeks in advance.

Accel -  computing area on the Engineering Library main floor is closed till noon Mondays, other Accel labs close as necessary in order to re-image and update computers.

ILR - ILR IT rarely updates their public computers. The ILR School labs might be updated more often.

Endowed and Law Libraries (DS-managed) - computers are re-imaged ~2-3 times per year as necessary.  Whenever possible, they are updated while libraries are closed.

Michael mentioned the possibility of setting up RSS feeds that would provide information like maintenance schedules, down time, software changes, etc.

5.    Validate the spreadsheet numbers

Accel has Engineering School-, Library-, and Cornell Fund-funded desktop computers and laptops, all inside Engineering Library. There is some confusion about which computers to list in which columns in the CUL PAC Inventory. Oliver, Laura, and Annemarie will meet to go over Accel's situation. The examination of Accel's and Engineering Library's spaces will serve as a very good reality check for the spreadsheet.

Discussed President Skorton's request for public laptop figures. Mary will put it on PSEC's agenda.

6.    Demo/pros & cons of new CUL guide on public computing

We touched on CUL public computing guides briefly, and will put the topic on next month's agenda.
