PCAC Committee Meeting
March 4, 2008 2:30 AM
Carpenter B1A

Agenda:

1. News & announcements (15 min)
  • Introduction of new Mann ITS member for PCAC (Michael)
  • Introduction of new Public Computing Coordinator in CRIO (Maureen)
  • New CIT public lab in Mann (Pat)
  • IT Strategic Plan (Oliver)
2. Approve minutes - Laura took them last time; Maureen's turn this time (5 min)
3. Discuss guest network access (Michael & Oliver, 20 min)
  • What does a guest encounter when they plug into an Ethernet port in a CUL unit library? Can they get online without a NetID? Recently a guest claimed he could not access the network without a NetID - let's determine what the situation is and, if necessary, start crafting a brief policy for such users.
4. Pros & cons of new CUL guide on public computing (all, 10 min)
  • It's still not ready for prime time (guides.library.cornell.edu/computing) but it's interactive, so add comments where needed directly on the page. Is this a good discovery tool for users of library computing, or is it just one more system to maintain? Thoughts?
5. Results & trends from the ARL survey on the management of public computing (Michael, 40 min)
  • A hopefully amusing and entertaining Powerpoint presentation on the otherwise dry subject of managing public computing. To be given at the NERCOMP 2008 conference in Providence, RI on March 12th.
