PCAC Committee Meeting October 2, 2007 2:30 PM Olin 703 Agenda: 1. News
2. Minutes
3. Discussion topics:
- PSEC funding for PCAC events (Open forum on desktop logins - maybe as an Academic Assembly? A PCAC "happy hour"?)
- Open forum logistics - possible date, who to invite from CIT, location, food, etc.?
- Rick Silterra visit
As part of the Web Vision Project, the 'inserting the library into non-library space' team is looking into the possibility of including FireFox, and a package of helpful extensions, like libX, into the 'public machine image'.
- CU-wide IT Security "baseline" standards
Review the requirements, work towards figuring out how best to "inventory" any exceptions centrally, per policy requirements. Click on "Baseline IT security requirements" at this URL to review the requirements: http://wiki.library.cornell.edu/wiki/x/p4c Minutes: News
-
Annemarie announced that there was a new director for ACCEL: Paul Davis.
-
Maureen announced that CRIO would be hiring a Coordinator for Public Computing, hopefully to start in January.
-
Oliver announced that Dell had new model bundles coming out soon.
-
Martha announced that there would be a new distance education classroom at the Fine Arts Library.
Ric Silterra from the Web Vision Team attended the meeting. The main piece of information he shared was that the team was considering making Firefox an option (if not the default option) on public computers throughout CUL, and installing the extension LibX onto those computers. LibX provides a bookmarklet that allows you to search your library’s catalog, has a right-click option to “send this page to proxy”, and puts an icon/link in places like Amazon to allow patrons to find a book they're viewing there in library catalog. This led to a wide ranging discussion:
- Since most documentation addresses Internet Explorer, would going to Firefox double that documentation?
- How popular is Firefox? FF’s extensions, upgrades, and general flexibility were cited.
- Can we handle running/supporting multiple browsers? What happens to users/units that use IE only?
- How many extensions are people using for FF and/or IE? What’s not working correctly? Who uses which extensions? How often are we updating the extensions?
Some preliminary conclusions were reached:
- We should keep “vanilla” IE on the machines as an option.
- We should also keep discussing putting FF (w/ extensions) on more public machines.
PCAC Events
Oliver and Michael announced that they had spoken to PSEC and discovered that PCAC has money set aside for events. An open forum on desktop logins was discussed, as well as scheduling said forum within a happy hour or an Academic Assembly meeting. This led to a clarifying discussion on the nature of desktop logins.
Baseline IT Security Requirements
A handout detailing the Baseline IT Security Requirements was presented and discussed. It was noted that this is a living document, meant to be reviewed yearly. Oliver requested that PCAC help him with the review, documentation, and communication of this document, as well as in tracking any units that were exceptions to its guidelines.
