PCAC Committee Meeting
October 3, 2005 1:00 PM
S1-014 Vet Library

Agenda:

Minutes:
Attendees: Michael Cook, Laura Heisey, Oliver Habicht, Keene Silfer, Suzanne Cohen, Pat Court, Pat Viele, Maureen Morris, Philip Halcomb, and Michael Friedman

Scribe: Pat Viele
According to our original charge, PCAC will send out agendas and post minutes. We will make recommendations to PSEC (for example our public computing policy), but not make final decisions. Our recommendations should go directly to PSEC and they will consult with other sub-groups as necessary.

PSEC will sponsor two forums per semester on topics of interest to the sub-groups: Instruction and Assessment, Reference and Outreach. The sub-groups may also sponsor discussion in the form of brown bag lunches, for example.
  • Format for minutes: a Word document sent to Michael to be posted both on CU-LIB and on our web page

  • The new price for printing has been established-- $.09 per side -- or LESS (JGSM charges $.08). The cost for printing color varies. Most units may be losing money on color copies.

  • There are 24 Net-Printers in CUL(E) [aka the endowed CU Libraries]. CUL has a new contract with Eastern Copy Products for new Xerox duplex printers, paper and toner.

  • There is some concern that paper-jams have increased since we changed paper brands (Badger to Boise). Is it due to humidity or to paper brand? Please alert Michael if you notice an increase. The glossy paper for the plotter printer is like a sponge and takes special handling.

  • When the "toner low" message appears, typically there is 10-15% left. Shaking the cartridge helps to get the last bits.

  • Wish list for locations of future meetings include, but are not limited to: ACCEL, Olin, Uris, Kroch, JGSM, Law, Hotel, Fine Arts and the gaming lab.

  • The next meeting for this group will be held on November 9 from 9:30 - 11AM in Clark 280 (located inside of the PSL library along the back hallway).

  • Computer support for the Lab of Ornithology is given on a voluntary basis by CIT.

  • Oliver will make a change in our Public Computing policy regarding the portion about CIT helpdesk support for personal computers. They offer support for RedRover, software, and virus problems. Oliver will also make a statement to the effect that this is a basic outline. Individual units may add to it as necessary. He will send it to Anne Kenny, the ITEC (Tracey Mitrano, Director of IT Policy), Pat Court liaison to PSEC, and Patrick Washburn, Public Computing Manager CIT.

  • The question was raised "Should hardware, software, and peripherals be added to the catalog?" There are currently several places to look for this information. Phil suggested an automated database instead. He will get more information about OCS inventory software and present it to us at the next meeting. Another option mentioned was Cybrarian. Another suggestion was a top level public computing page with links to various sources. (CIT list, find hardware and software, statistics on campus).

  • Maureen will work on the finding hardware and software page and demonstrate it at the December meeting of this group.

  • Oliver mentioned that no inventory of hardware and software was done last year. It probably should be done at least every other year.
